Energy Conservation
Helping Reduce Energy Consumption in Government-owned Buildings
The Ontario Realty Corporation continues to play a key role in assisting the provincial government to effect a noticeable reduction in its overall energy consumption. In 2007-08, the ORC achieved 11.98% reduction in kilowatt hours against the 2002/03 base year.
As the strategic manager of the provincial government's real estate portfolio, the ORC continues to demonstrate leadership when it comes to conserving energy. We are taking action with initiatives like Enwave deep water-cooling and cogeneration at facilities like the Ontario Police College, and managing several projects including changing master building specifications for constructing new or renovating buildings, lighting retrofits, building automation, chiller/HVAC system replacements or improvements, and performance monitoring.
Twenty-five buildings in the ORC portfolio have been honoured in 2008 with prestigious awards from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). BOMA BESt combines BOMA’s Go Green and Go Green Plus initiatives.
They include four possible levels of certification, each of which requires full compliance with BOMA’s Best Practices. They also include areas of significant environmental concern such as energy and water management, emissions and effluents, waste reduction, the indoor environment and environmental management systems.
Among the buildings honoured, BOMA has recognized 135 St. Clair Avenue West in Toronto (the Ontario Ministry of the Environment) as BOMA BESt and named that facility The Office Building of the Year (TOBY) nationally. In St. Catharines, Ontario, the Garden City Tower won the International TOBY award, the National Earth award, as well as BOMA BESt certification in 2008. In Thunder Bay, Ontario, 189 Red River Road, another provincial government property, has been recognized as an Earth Award winner, for being the "best of class" among BOMA BESt facilities between 100,000 and 249,999 square feet.
