West Don Lands, Toronto (Flood Protection Landform)

Site and Project Description

Objective:
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MEI) in partnership with the City of Toronto and the Federal Government, is funding the redevelopment of the West Don Lands, a 90-acre site in downtown Toronto, bounded by Eastern Avenue and King Street East to the north, CNR rail lines to the south, the Don River to the east and Parliament Street to the west.

The Government of Ontario presently holds title to 59 acres of the West Don Lands property, with the rest being municipally and privately owned.

In order for redevelopment to proceed, the flood plain designation must be removed. The purpose of this project is to design and construct the Flood Protection Landform (FPL) which will lift the flood plain designation permit redevelopment.

Key Project Feature: The most critical feature of the project is the FPL as this will allow redevelopment to proceed. The project also involves the re-alignment of Bayview Ave., extension of River St., installation of the associated servicing and utilities and preparation of the site for park development. The project is being undertaken in partnership with Waterfront Toronto (WT), City of Toronto and Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).

Project Start Date: Winter, 2005
Expected Completion: Late 2011
