A 2003 report for the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and the former Region of Hamilton-Wentworth identified portions of the Trinity Neighbourhood lands as falling within an Earth Science Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI-ES). The ANSI-ES identifies a unique and provincially significant karst landscape (identified by sinkholes, sinking streams, and caves).

From 2003-06 the ORC and the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) worked together to identify and survey a core area, buffer area, and feeder creek area for the ANSI. On October 23, 2006, 73 hectares of the provincially owned lands (including the entire core and buffer area) were given to the HCA for the creation of the Eramosa Karst Conservation Area. In early 2008, an extra 2.8 hectares was given to the HCA for inclusion as part of the Eramosa Karst Conservation Area based on community input and the early findings of ORC studies.

Current Site and Project Description

In early 2007, ORC commissioned a consulting team to conduct detailed technical planning and environmental studies on the remaining provincially-owned land east of the Eramosa Karst Conservation Area. This was in response to City land use and infrastructure proposals for the lands in question, and in order to determine any opportunities to enhance the value of surplus government lands prior to disposition. These study requirements were outlined in the 2003 MNR report.
