Community

The retrofit of 222 Jarvis Street will help revitalize this historic downtown neighbourhood by creating just over 1,000 jobs during its duration. Ontario is getting its house in order by greening this Ontario government building which will help create green jobs, build a sustainable workplace for the future and fuel a green economy. The influx of government employees in the area will also benefit local businesses, stimulate the local economy and contribute to a sustainable community.

Community Update

Hoarding has been installed around the perimeter of the property in order to protect the community by limiting access to the active construction site.  Demolition of the interior of the building is underway and is expected to be completed in the early summer.  Work has recently begun on upgrades to the existing Mechanical/Electrical and Sprinkler systems. Refurbishment of the existing escalators is underway and will continue until autumn 2010.  Beginning this spring, renovations to the Jarvis Street entrance of the building will commence to make way for a new, bright and accessible entranceway from the street.  Beginning in mid-April, thermally-sealed windows will be installed throughout the building to improve energy efficiency and promote the overall comfort of the future tenants.

Community Open House

A public meeting was held on January 21, 2010 to inform the community about the project and provide an opportunity to ask questions. The meeting was well-attended, with about 35 community members including the local Councillor (Kyle Rae) and featured a presentation by Lori Robinson, Senior Vice President of Strategic Asset Management with ORC, which was followed by an enthusiastic Q and A session. WZMH Architects and URBACON (Construction Manager) were on hand to respond to the community's questions about the project.

Parking

The parking lot is being used as a staging area for the retrofit project over the next 18 months and as a result, is now closed to the public. Following that, the government will be reviewing how the parking lot can best be utilized.
